MRA COMMISSIONER GENERAL CALLS FOR ENHANCED COLLABORATION BETWEEN MRA AND ICAM

The Commissioner General for Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA), Mr. Tom Gray Malata has called for enhanced collaboration between MRA and ICAM. He was speaking on 16 January 2018 when ICAM paid him a courtesy call. The ICAM team comprised the CEO, Dr. Francis Chinjoka Gondwe, Director of Finance and Administration, Bertha Misomali and Zion Tamula, Senior Corporate Affairs Assistant. The Commissioner General was accompanied by the Commissioner responsible for Domestic Taxes, Mrs Nellie Jimu.

Mr. Malata observed that MRA has had some differences on tax matters with audit firms, and said, ‘We will soon call for a technical meeting where we can discuss such matters. All the Commissioners will be present for such a meeting with ICAM.’

The chief tax collector added: ‘MRA is readily available to provide technical advice whenever required and as requested.’

Weighing in on some crucial matters, ICAM CEO Dr. Francis Gondwe requested MRA to ensure that auditors that submit reports to MRA are members of ICAM.

Gondwe explains: ‘Business people submit accounts to MRA for tax purposes and these accounts must have been prepared by competent accountants and vetted by competent auditors. The law assigns such a great task to only those registered with ICAM.’

To have a platform linking MRA with accountants, MRA requested to have a dedicated column in the ICAM magazine where taxation developments will regularly be communicated
