ICAM USHERS IN NEW COUNCIL LEADERSHIP AT 2026 ANNUAL LAKESHORE CONFERENCE

22nd  September 2026

The Institute of Chartered Accountants in Malawi (ICAM) has ushered in a new chapter of leadership following the election of a new President, Vice President and Council members at the Institute’s 14th Annual General Meeting (AGM), held on 18 September 2026 at Sun n’ Sand Hotel in Mangochi.

The elections took place during the ICAM 2026 Annual Lakeshore Conference, which brought together more than 1,400 professionals, business leaders, policymakers and other stakeholders under the theme “From Silos to Synergies: Strategic Partnerships for Malawi’s Sustainable Transformation.”

MACDONALD KAMOTO ELECTED NEW ICAM PRESIDENT

The ICAM Council has elected CA. MacDonald Kamoto, a Partner at Ernst & Young (EY) Malawi and former Vice President of ICAM, as the new President of the Institute.

Kamoto takes over the leadership of ICAM from CA. Daniel Jere, who served as President from 2024 to 2026 after succeeding CA. Moffat Ngalande. Kamoto is no stranger to ICAM leadership. Prior to his election as President, he served as Vice President and as a member of the ICAM Council. His experience within the Institute, coupled with his extensive professional background in audit and advisory services at EY, gives him a strong understanding of both the accountancy profession and the strategic role ICAM plays in Malawi.

His elevation to the presidency represents a continuation of leadership experience within the Council, while also ushering in a new phase for the Institute as it seeks to strengthen the profession and deepen its contribution to Malawi’s economic and sustainable development.

DELVIN KHONGONO ELECTED VICE PRESIDENT

The AGM also paved the way for new leadership at the vice-presidential level, with CA. Delvin Khongono, Chief Executive Officer of MINET, elected as the new Vice President of ICAM.

Khongono, who was already a Council Member, brings also considerable experience from the corporate and professional environment. His appointment adds another dimension to the Institute’s leadership as ICAM continues to engage with the private sector, government, development partners and other stakeholders on matters affecting the accountancy profession and the wider economy.

As Vice President, CA. Khongono will work closely with the new President and Council in providing strategic direction to the Institute and supporting the implementation of its mandate. His election also reflects the Institute’s continued recognition of the importance of strong professional leadership, diverse experience and collaboration in advancing the accountancy profession.

A SYMBOLIC PASSING OF THE MANTLE

One of the most memorable moments of the leadership transition came during the handover of the presidency.

In a symbolic gesture that captured the spirit of continuity and succession within the profession, former ICAM Presidents CA. Chiwemi Chihana and CA. Moffat Ngalande joined the outgoing President, CA. Daniel Jere, and the incoming President, CA. MacDonald Kamoto, during the transition ceremony.

The two former Presidents added a special touch to the occasion by helping to physically lift and pass the presidential mantle from CA. Jere to CA. Kamoto. The gesture was more than ceremonial. It represented the passing of responsibility from one generation of ICAM leadership to another, while recognising the contribution of those who have served the Institute before and reaffirming the principle of continuity in leadership.

The presence of former Presidents CA. Chiwemi Chihana and CA. Moffat Ngalande also provided a powerful reminder that ICAM’s leadership journey is built on the collective contribution of successive Councils and Presidents.

A FAREWELL TO OUTGOING LEADERSHIP

The AGM also provided an opportunity for ICAM to recognise and bid farewell to members of Council whose terms had come to an end.

Among those leaving Council was CA. Victoria Munkhondiya, who completed her two consecutive terms as a Council member. The Institute expressed its appreciation for her service and contribution to the governance and development of ICAM during her tenure. The occasion also marked the end of CA. Daniel Jere’s tenure as President.

Jere assumed the presidency in 2024 after serving as Vice President under the leadership of CA. Moffat Ngalande. Over the past two years, he provided leadership to the Institute during a period of continued transformation in the accountancy profession and the broader Malawian economy.

His departure from the presidency brings to an end another chapter in ICAM’s leadership succession, while his experience and contribution remain part of the Institute’s institutional history. The Institute extends its appreciation to both CA. Jere and CA. Munkhondiya for their service and commitment to the accountancy profession.

NEW COUNCIL MEMBERS ELECTED

The AGM also saw the election of three new Council members, representing key areas of the accountancy profession. The newly elected Council members are:

  • CA. Mark Lackson – Council Member, Practicing
  • CA. Martin Msimuko – Council Member, Non-Practicing
  • CA. Stephen Chimtengo – Council Member, Academia

Their election brings additional professional perspectives to the Council and reinforces ICAM’s commitment to ensuring that different segments of the profession are represented in its governance structures.

A NEW CHAPTER FOR ICAM

The election of CA. MacDonald Kamoto and CA. Delvin Khongono comes at an important time for ICAM and the accountancy profession.

The Institute continues to play a central role in promoting professional competence and integrity through education, training and advocacy, while strengthening the contribution of professional accountants to sustainable economic growth in Malawi. The new leadership inherits an Institute that continues to evolve in response to changes in technology, business, regulation, education and the wider economic environment.

The conference theme, “From Silos to Synergies: Strategic Partnerships for Malawi’s Sustainable Transformation,” provided an appropriate backdrop for the leadership transition.

CONTINUITY, RENEWAL AND THE ROAD AHEAD

The 2026 AGM was therefore more than an election of office bearers. It was a celebration of ICAM’s leadership journey, a recognition of those who have served, and the beginning of a new chapter.

From the symbolic passing of the presidential mantle between CA. Daniel Jere and CA. MacDonald Kamoto, witnessed by former Presidents CA. Chiwemi Chihana and CA. Moffat Ngalande, to the election of CA. Delvin Khongono as Vice President and three new Council members, the occasion brought together the past, present and future of the Institute.

As the new Council assumes its responsibilities, ICAM looks ahead with a renewed focus on professional excellence, strong governance, collaboration and the continued advancement of the accountancy profession in Malawi.

The Institute congratulates CA. MacDonald Kamoto on his election as President, CA. Delvin Khongono on his election as Vice President, and the newly elected Council members CA. Mark Lackson, CA. Martin Msimuko and CA. Stephen Chimtengo.

ICAM also extends its sincere appreciation to outgoing President CA. Daniel Jere and outgoing Council Member CA. Victoria Munkhondiya for their service and contribution to the Institute.

The baton has been passed. A new leadership chapter has begun.
